South Western Railway commuters spot unexpected passenger and everyone makes same joke

When travelling on public transport, particularly in peak times, you are bound to end up sitting next to a stranger if you're travelling alone and the carriages are busy. And sometimes you might end up sitting with an unusual character. However passengers on a South West train never expected to see a creature on their journey recently.

A passenger was given a fright when they spotted the unusual passenger. Train driver Mark was stunned after a polite traveller came up to him and said she had spotted a crab sitting on top of one of the seats. She said: "Excuse me driver, there's a live crab on the seat over there and it's been there since I got on at Guildford."

In a post shared on Instagram, South Western Rail said: "Unusual passenger alert. The crab - who Mark named Craig the Crab - made it all the way to Portsmouth and Southsea before being re-homed.

"Our colleagues are always eager to help a customer in a pinch."

One commented on the post and said: "Oh poor thing, thanks for saving it in such a wonderfully British way." "Not what you were expecting," added another.

"Poor thing," wrote another concerned individual.

Knowing the crab is now safe, others rushed to make jokes about its train journey.

"Did he shell out on a ticket?" commented one.

Another joked: "Craig the crab was subsequently issued with a fixed penalty of £100."

"As long as he paid his fare I don’t think we can complain," wrote another.

Another jokingly said: "Get the crab an Oyster card!"

Another added: "Hey he paid his fare let him go on his travels."

One said: "Should have detoured to Margate Crab Museum Glad he was rehomed!"

"Little nipper just wanted a holiday," commented another on the post.

Earlier this year, people were left horrified after spotting a snake slithering under the seats on the Frecciarossa high-speed train between Lecce and Milan in Italy.

Several trampled on each other to get away from the snake. To deal with the problem, the driver of the Red Arrow Frecciarossa high-speed train was forced to make an unscheduled stop at Ancona railway station, near Florence, where police officers and forest rangers were on hand to deal with the slippery stowaway.
